<Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh! Hard times come again no more.
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh! Hard times come again no more…>
I sure do hope so, God willing, Daniel Graham sighed as he looked himself over a mirror one more time and fixed his bowtie. The r

If there were one word that Amelia F. Jones could describe the past few hours, it’d be “overwhelming.” That’s not entirely true though, the American thought to herself as she fidgeted the blue, if rather modest cocktail dress she wore. I can think of more than one word. Sighing, she strained to smile as she watched her hosts give a brief history of the ballroom they were in and that of the castle surrounding it.
It wasn’t as though the Survivor-Nation could

Facing the deceptively picturesque waters of Bodensee, there seemed to be nothing particularly notable about the airfield aside from an occassional fighter or helicopter from the Alpine Air Corps. Today however was different, with police and Alpine Militia alike keeping journalists – and potential troublemakers – behind barricades far from the premises. All while a small welcoming party assembled on the tarmac, complete with a small detachment of Landespolizei straight from

Roderich Edelstein watched with a mix of trepidation and curiosity as a car came to a halt the front of his house. It was a black Steyr sedan of a more recent type coming out of the assembly lines rather than the sort of refurbished car left over from before Doomsday still common on the roads. The discreet, almost invisible markings on the side however marked its passenger as part of the World Census and Reclamation Bureau, that peculiar organization that answered to the second retread of the League of Nati

Roderich Edelstein wasn’t one for peculiar dreams. Dreams where he, being not only the representative of Austria but Austria himself, still stood resplendent. Of whole worlds wherein the atomic fires known as Doomsday never burned back in ’83. Where Elizaveta never had to pay the price. And no one had to at all, he mused to himself, only to shake the notion off his mind as he strained to sit up. There’s no point dwelling on such things.
After taking his spectacles from a nearby night

Roderich Edelstein wrapped his old greatcoat tighter as he and his Alpine counterpart walked towards the Domplatz. Not many people were out, neither locals nor tourists. Then again, the Austrian embodiment noted wryly while keeping pace with as much dignity as could be mustered. This is what passes for normal now. To be sure, the relative lack of foreign visitors was a given, as most of their places of origin were long gone. But today was different. Most o

The young girl had no idea where she was. But there were loud, inhuman screams everywhere, more than she could count. The walls surrounding her, which looked as though they'd fall down at any minute, also seemed to close in ever so slowly. She didn’t want to be here.
"Don't be afraid," the little girl mumbled to herself in Hungarian, more nervous than confident as she found it harder to breathe. It wasn't the first time this had happened. After so ma

"Is there any news from the outside world, Brüetsch?" Vash Zwingli heard his sister ask as she adjusted her utensils. “It’s been two years since then.”
As much as the embodiment of Switzerland – and one-half of the newly forged Austro-Swiss Union – attempted to feign a shrug of rough indifference, he couldn’t quite pull it off. Can’t hide it in front of you, Lilli, he thought while shaking off more uncomfortable thoughts. Ne
