Alpine Confederation Map-File Revised-Final Ver.

Here is a revised and updated version of the earlier 1983: Doomsday map-file based on the Alpine Confederation ( [link] ), which is also the setting of many of the Doomsday-verse stories.

The changes here were primarily in language translations, borders, design and place names. But in all other respects, such as with the text profile, the details remain the same, though more polished and expanded upon.

I wasn't sure exactly whether to simply update the original post. But perhaps it's for the best that this might serve as a new one.

Established at its present from in 1997, the Alpine Confederation has emerged as the leading and most stable power in the wastelands that had been Central-Western Europe. Owing to its largely intact nature, it is also home to the regional headquarters of the reconstituted League of Nations (located at the Palais des Nations in Geneva) and a number of former UN facilities. The official capital is Vaduz (Liechtenstein), though power is equally distributed in Bern (Switzerland) and Linz (Austria).

The present Confederation's core, constituent "statelets," (Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) largely escaped the nuclear war that erupted on 26 September 1983, scorching large parts of the world in atomic fire in what would later be known as "Doomsday." The exception however was Austria, which experienced both the nuclear destruction of its capital (the so-called Genocide of Vienna) and an invasion by Soviet garrisons across the Iron Curtain, which was bloodily pushed back within weeks. By 1984, as the world around them continued to slide into chaos, the Swiss and surviving Austrians forged what came to be known as the Austro-Swiss Union.

The initial years was marked by rationing, food shortages, upheavals, epidemics of radiation sickness and significant military action as refugees and bandits alike threatened to overwhelm the Alpine countries, even though they were (forcibly) pushed back with a vengeance. Such was the extent of the chaos that they soon resorted to brutally closing down their borders. Still, they persevered. Economic and socio-political stability was gradually restored as conditions improved. And until the Prussian Expedition in 1994 and subsequent contact (and clashes) with the Italian wastelands, they would see themselves as the last bastion of civilization on Earth.

By the mid-late 1990s, the Alpines (as the nations called themselves) had expanded their territories and influence into the surrounding survivor states and communities that had emerged in what had been France, Italy and Germany. By that point, the three countries remained decisively independent yet closely knit to one another, reflective of both their Alpine proximity and the shared experience of Doomsday. Indeed the system already in place reflected a combination of the unique Austrian and Swiss models, which is upheld to this day. But it was only after Liechtenstein was formally welcomed into the Union in 1997 that the Confederation took on its current form.

Today, despite upholding the very same neutrality that saved it from the bombs, the union stands poised as a potential political player in Europe. Beyond its official borders, it "supervises" an alliance of Survivor Nations in northern Italy based in Venice and San Marino (which detractors deride as glorified puppet states), with Alpine forces maintaining security within their influence; coincidentally, their actions were in response to Fascist/Mafia-controlled Sicily and its plans to control all of the Italian wastes. Closer to home, the statelets have supported the various Territories and Special Regions, with Bavaria (or what's left of it after the destruction of Munich) being the closest to attaining formal membership, albeit as a protectorate. The Magyars of Sopron, with the support of their Austrian "protectors," continue persisting on a proper exploration and resettlement of western Hungary, fully backed by the Confederation. But with the Sicilian question still in the air and the frontiers to the "Hungarian wastes" still looming with security concerns, efforts remain sporadic. Though time would tell as to how this particular episode would ultimately go...
